This morning I wanted to see if I could by proccess of elimination figure out what is gonig on with my set up.

I disconnected the machine torch cable from my plasma cutter and hooked up my manual torch, I've cut with the hand held with no issues for the last two years.

I turned on the plasma cutter, no faults. Pulled the trigger and nothing, then hear a loud pop in my Accumove 2 with smoke coming out. Not good! I'm pretty sure I'm going to need a new controller, I know when the smoke comes out of them that is never good. I'm leaning towards a short in my plasma cutter, but there are no faults.

Very frustrating and Thermal Dynamics tech support is closed.

I had a direct short in one of the cables going to a stepper motor , it smoked a board inside the acc #2. Replaced cable. Works fine

Good to know thank you. I'm curious to know why trying to fire The plasma cutter would cause the issue

Electricity follows the path of least resistance, if you have something going on with the plasma cutter and it is grounded to the table and the Accumove is grounded to the table as well, then it could have smoked the electronics that way. The path of lease resistance should of been to the earth ground rod if you had the table connected to one. You would also want to check if you have a relay connected to the Accumove controller, in the back of the 4 small round connectors it would be the lower right one, there should be a cable connected to this port (circle with an arrow to the outside), this relay is there to protect the ohmic circuit.

The plasma cutter is grounded to the table via the ground clamp. Should it be a hard wired ground? Also I have a 8' grounding rod pushed 6ft into the ground outside my shop.

So ground rod to table. Work lead to the material/table. GS is a little tricky going to table as the multiple pans and getting good connection throughout.

It seems that voltage backfed to the co triller through the AHC or direct from the plasma cutter via the wiring from plasma cutter PC board to controller. I've dropped my accumove 2 and plasma cutter at a welding & torch equipment repair shop. Will keep you posted.

    Thanks.
